Last Saturday night, NFL Network premiered the 2025 edition of America’s Game, the annual NFL Films-produced documentary on the reigning Super Bowl champions, this time starring the Seattle Seahawks.
Less than 24 hours later, the Los Angeles Rams announced that they had lured Aaron Donald out of retirement and signed him to a one-year, $20m contract that could reach $30m with incentives.

The Seahawks and the Rams were the NFL’s two best teams in the 2025 season; of that there is little doubt. They faced each other three times – twice in the regular season and then, in the NFC championship game – and the final point total in those three games was 88-85 in Seattle’s favor. Seattle’s 31-27 NFC championship win was far more competitive than Super Bowl LX, which saw the Seahawks beat up on the New England Patriots 29-13 in a game less competitive than the score indicates.
While the Seahawks spent the offseason celebrating their championship and, in the words of head coach Mike Macdonald, “ running it forward ”, the Rams underwent a defensive transformation the likes of which you rarely see in one year – if ever. They traded multiple draft picks, including a 2026 first-round selection, for Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie, and signed him to a four-year, $124m contract extension with $100m guaranteed. To finish a much-needed makeover of a vulnerable cornerback group, they signed free agent Jaylen Watson, McDuffie’s estimable bookend in Kansas City, to a three-year, $51m contract.
As if that wasn’t enough, on 1 June, the Rams traded their 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2029 third-round pick, plus edge-rusher Jared Verse, to the Cleveland Browns for edge-rusher Myles Garrett. The 30-year-old is the best pass rusher of his era; he’s coming off a 2025 campaign in which he set pro football’s official single-season sack record at 23.
Donald’s subsequent return seems like overkill. And the effect on opposing offenses could be severe. Per ESPN Analytics/NFL Next Gen Stats , Garrett and Donald rank first and second in pass rush win rate since 2017, and that’s with Donald missing the last two seasons. Add these future first-ballot Hall of Famers to a Rams defensive line that already rebuilt itself after Donald’s retirement, and those poor opposing offenses may have no way to counter the formidable combination of pressure and coverage.
Garrett and Donald have been among the most double-teamed defenders throughout their careers. Now, who do you double, and who do you leave on an island, putting your quarterback at severe risk? There is no right answer. Even if you double both players, that leaves openings for Byron Young, Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske – all great quarterback disruptors the Rams developed Moneyball-style after Donald’s first retirement, when they had to replace one irreplaceable player in the aggregate.
That’s the idealized version of the story.
The less palatable version for the Rams is … well, more like a nightmare. What if this “Dream Team” goes the way of the 2004 New York Yankees, the 2007 New England Patriots, the 2011 Philadelphia Eagles, the 2011–12/2012–13 Los Angeles Lakers, or other “perfectly assembled” teams who ultimately fell short of their goals?
The Rams’ biggest potential speedbump is not on defense. It’s the health of quarterback Matthew Stafford, who will turn 39 a week before this season’s Super Bowl. Stafford was healthy and at his best in 2025; that’s how he bagged his first NFL MVP award.
Including the playoffs, Stafford threw 52 touchdown passes last season. But in the previous three seasons from 2022 to 2024, as he dealt with injuries that had him thinking of retirement more than once, he totalled 60 combined. With Stetson Bennett and rookie Ty Simpson, the Rams do not have a backup plan that is Super Bowl-conversant. Per Sumer Sports , since 2022, the Rams’ on/off splits regarding Stafford are terrifying.

There’s also the possibility that receiver Puka Nacua and left tackle Alaric Jackson, two of the offense’s most important players not named Matthew Stafford, could face suspensions this season for off-field transgressions.

While Donald may be the best defensive tackle in the history of professional football, coming back after two full seasons away from the game – at the age of 35 – is an outlier of outliers. Donald has become famous for keeping himself in amazing shape during his hiatus, but gym-shape and football-shape are two entirely different things.
“I’ve kind of been in a football mindset the last 14 weeks,” Donald said in the press conference officially announcing his return. “If anything, it’s just getting back on that grass and knocking the rust off as far as playing football again … working my eyes, getting a feel for the game, certain reaction things that made me who I am.
“But do I feel like I can play at a high level? Yes. Do I feel like I can still be myself? 100%. If I didn’t feel like that, I wouldn’t be here.”
That’s all well and good, but history has not been kind to 35-year-old defensive tackles. The only such player who amassed more than 10 sacks in a season was Steve McMichael for the 1992 Chicago Bears, and McMichael wasn’t coming off a long layoff – he had nine sacks the year before. Donald was above McMichael’s level at his peak, but this is still no sure thing. “Mean” Joe Greene of the legendary Pittsburgh Steelers dynasty teams of the 1970s, the rare individual who could knock Donald off the “Greatest DT of All Time” mountain, started seven games and had just 4.5 sacks in his age 35 year of 1981 . Again, without that two-year layoff.
When you’re relying on gamechangers on the wrong end of the age curve, any regression can hit with the force of a Donald/Garrett combined quarterback sack.
On paper, there are all kinds of reasons to think of the Rams as the prohibitive favorite to win the Super Bowl. But as the old cliche tells us, games are not played on paper – they’re played on the field. And there’s a lot of football to be played before we’ll know how all this activity actually works. Ask the other Dream Teams who never quite made their dreams come true.
