Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has launched a ₹3,108.55 crore ring main pipeline project to connect the city's nine water treatment facilities. This initiative aims to provide a reliable and equitable water supply to residents by creating a circular loop that prevents service disruptions.

The ring main project

The project involves creating a closed circular loop to interlink various water sources and treatment plants across the city.

This system is designed to replace the current arrangement where water is supplied from individual plants to specific areas.

By connecting these facilities, the infrastructure will ensure that water can be redirected if a disruption occurs at any single source or treatment plant.

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is responsible for implementing this work.

This project represents a significant shift in how the city manages its water resources.

Instead of relying on isolated pathways, the grid will allow for a more flexible distribution of treated water.

Why it matters for residents

The current infrastructure relies on primary pipelines from individual plants, which leaves the system vulnerable to supply issues.

This new project is essential for maintaining consistent service for the city's large population.

  • Residents of the Greater Chennai Corporation area
  • Approximately 91 lakh people currently served
  • Households dependent on the 1,260 million litres per day supply
  • Communities served by the 143 existing distribution stations

Equitable access to clean water is a primary concern for urban planning.

By ensuring that no single plant failure cuts off supply to a neighborhood, the project aims to stabilize the daily lives of millions.

How we got here

Chennai currently sources water from several reservoirs, including Puzhal, Cholavaram, Veeranam, Chembarambakkam, Thervoy Kandigai-Kannankottai, and Poondi, as well as the Krishna river.

These sources feed into treatment plants located in Puzhal, Surapet, Kilpauk, Chembarambakkam, and Veeranam.

Additionally, the city uses water from a desalination plant at Minjur and two plants at Nemmeli.

Despite these resources, the lack of an interconnected system has historically made it difficult to manage supply if one facility faces a disruption.

Historically, the city has relied on designed primary pipelines to move water from specific treatment plants to designated zones.

This model functioned well under normal conditions but lacked the redundancy needed for modern urban resilience.

What happens next

The project will proceed with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank.

Officials will oversee the construction and installation phases to ensure the system is fully integrated.

  1. Laying of 91.2 km of interconnected pipelines.
  2. Installation of 64.2 km of water transmission pipelines.
  3. Construction of 2.65 km of pumping mains.
  4. Implementation of monitoring systems for pressure, flow, and quality.

Once completed, the project will allow for continuous monitoring from a central control room at the Chennai Metrowater headquarters.

This will be managed through the installation of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems.

These technical upgrades are expected to provide real-time data to operators.

This will allow for faster responses to potential leaks or changes in water quality across the distribution network.

Key facts at a glance

  • The project cost is ₹3,108.55 crore.
  • Nine treatment facilities will be interlinked.
  • A 400 MLD desalination plant is being built at Perur.
  • The system will monitor water quality and flow in real-time.
  • The foundation stone was laid in Sholinganallur.
