This is how we do it: ‘My ex wouldn’t even kiss me during sex. Marcus is happy to take his time’

Marcus will go down on me for as long as it takes. He has a gentle touch and is an amazing kisser

I met Marcus on Guardian Soulmates nine years ago. I had been divorced for eight years, and getting back out there had been tough – I had a hard time finding a genuine man. We messaged back and forth about our shared love of films and discovered we only lived 10 minutes apart. He really took the pressure off our first date by writing: “If there isn’t a romantic spark, we can just be friends who watch films together at our local cinema.” But when we met, we both felt a connection.

Even so, I decided to wait to have sex with him. I’d had bad experiences of sleeping with men, who would then disappear on me. Marcus was very respectful and patient.

He’s taught me that it’s not all about penetration. In my previous marriage, the sex was check-listy and turn-takey. It felt like a routine task – done without care, interest or enthusiasm. My ex-husband wasn’t very nice to me. I found it hard to understand how he expected me to sleep with him when we weren’t in a good place. Sometimes we would have sex and not even kiss. Marcus is happy to take his time, and go down on me for as long as it takes for me to orgasm. He has a gentle touch and is an amazing kisser.

The other day, I dressed up in only a leather jacket and high boots and Marcus took racy photos

We still live in our separate homes, near one another. It works well for us because from Monday to Thursday I am often overwhelmed by my stressful job and don’t have the capacity for sex. Fridays are the best time for us. I’ll ask him: “Do you fancy having sex?” He always says yes, I never feel rejected. In the past, I dressed up in sexy underwear for my ex and he just laughed at me. The other day, I dressed up in only a leather jacket and high boots and Marcus took racy photos of me.

We spend weekends at each other’s houses and prioritise our sex life. My kids are grown up and out of the house, so it’s a different experience to be able to walk around the house naked with your boyfriend. He often compliments my body. When I was young, I was super slim. Now I’ve put on a bit of weight but it’s encouraging that Marcus is always telling me how good I look.

Camille has an incredible body. She is the most desirable woman I’ve ever been with

I was quite newly single when Camille and I started chatting. I was intrigued by our compatibility – I had been in a long marriage and a long-term relationship, and in both cases we’d become less and less compatible as time went on. I would invite my partner to the cinema or an exhibition, but she had lost interest in coming to those things with me. On our first date, Camille and I went for lunch and to see a film, and I just wanted to keep chatting to her all night. I didn’t mind that she wanted to wait a few weeks before having sex.

When Camille comes out of the bathroom naked, I always tell her it’s my first treat of the day

We live separately and don’t tend to have sex from Monday to Thursday. Before her current job, I would often pick her up from the station and we would head to bed straight after work. Nowadays, she’s working so late that we don’t have time for that. If I am there during the week, I can see how stressed she is – and I am happy to kiss or cuddle. It’s not about me at that moment, and the last thing I would do is try to initiate. She has Fridays off and so that is a regular opening for us. On the weekends, we are big fans of doing it before we head out the house.

I felt a lot of rejection in my previous relationships. With my second long-term partner, our sex life dwindled down to almost nothing. In my marriage, my wife would say things like “you’ve missed your chance”. I had not even noticed an opening – but apparently instead of going to the shops we could have been doing it. With Camille, she tells me when she wants to have sex, and she initiates it. I know where I stand.

When Camille comes out of the bathroom naked, I always tell her it’s my first treat of the day. She doesn’t believe me, but she has an incredible body. She is the most desirable woman I’ve ever been with, and I’m often basking in the afterglow of our sex.
